In the next big update, Pokecenters are supposed to replace the Pokestops, asking several people why they think Niantic is doing the change, no one knew why. Don't worry, though, I may know... while Niantic is known for their hard work trying to keep the nostalgic feeling for the players, not only from the anime but also the games.
In the Pokemon games, you go to a Pokecenter to heal/ revive Pokemon. That isn't all, though. There is a well-forgotten feature. In the games, if you head up to the second floor of the Pokecenter, you will encounter a row of NPCs behind counters. Talk to one of them and you are given a few options, one is to trade another is to battle with friends.
Recent spoilers to an upcoming patch, trading and battle are both amongst the lengthy update. Pokecenters too are included within the notes leaked to the public. There really isn't much of any other reason to even add Pokecenters to the game, unless it was for the trading and dueling aspect of the game. It would be interesting to see if you fainted/ damaged Pokemon will heal over time setting at a center, but chances are slim.
Why remove the Pokestops though? It's easier to "remove" them or in a better sense upgrade them into something better rather than adding or replacing a few Pokestops with Pokecenters. I highly dought the removal of the Pokestops will influence the items gained from them. More than likely Pokecenters too will be spin spots unless Niantic has become money hungry.
Keep in mind if you already know why Niantic is implementing Pokecenters in the game, others still may not. There are several new players that have been introduced to the Pokemon franchise, the leading cause for my Who's that Pokemon post, introducing the new, and even old players to the nostalgic Pokerap.
